IS BUYING SEX TOYS SAFE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC?

Today, I received the following query from a reader:

Is purchasing sex toys safe during the coronavirus pandemic?

If you’re anything like me, you’re terrified about the COVID-19 Coronavirus. This pandemic, which began in earnest in Canada only a few weeks ago, has completely altered my way of life. Because I have pre-existing health concerns that put me at danger, I am highly attentive, which means I rarely leave my house and must treat anything that enters as a possible source of COVID-19.

However, when we’re all stuck at home with nothing to do, many people consider upgrading their collection of sex toys. I’ve noticed an increase in traffic to this blog over the last week, so it appears as though you’re not the only one looking to purchase new sex toys during this time.

So how risky is it to buy for sex toys during a coronavirus outbreak? Here are my reflections!

Disclaimer: I am not a physician or a specialist in infectious diseases. I’m simply presenting the protocols that I’m following individually throughout the coronavirus outbreak. Always consult your local health authority or health care practitioner to determine the best method of protection against COVID-19. Additionally, keep in mind that information on COVID-19 is always changing, and hence part of the information in this post may be out of current by the time you read it.

YES, BUYING SEX TOYS IS SAFE DURING THE CORONAVIRUS…
IF PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN

Yes, during the coronavirus pandemic, you can totally purchase sex toys. However, like with any purchase, certain precautions must be taken.

WHY BUY SEX TOYS NOW IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Simply said, now is the time you require additional joy in your life.

Sex toys have enriched my sex life for years. Utilizing sex toys is an excellent way to relieve stress, and some of you may have more time than ever to be frisky.

If your lover is not quarantined beside you, you may be seeking for a new way to connect with them without being physically present… After all, the folks you’ve been dating (but not living with) have practically transformed themselves overnight into long-distance lovers. In such case, app-controlled sex toys can be an excellent means of connecting with your companions.

Thus, these guidelines are for anyone who wish to purchase sex toys but are unsure how to do it safely. Perhaps my procedures are excessive… However, I would rather be safe than sorry.

1 SELECT ONLINE STORES OVER IN-PERSON STORES

Online sex toy buying, in my opinion, is far safer than traveling to a store in person during the coronavirus. Numerous sex toy businesses are compact and personal, with little space between aisles for the recommended two meters of social separation. The majority of online sex toy retailers send their products from massive warehouses, not from a small region where a lot of people have been breathing. To my mind, when you order online, there is less likelihood of anyone (let alone an infected person) breathing and frequently handling the precise item you will receive.

Additionally, remember to choose only bodysafe sex toys. Not all materials used in sex toys are created equal. I already discussed the issue of sex toy material safety in this piece.

2. IF YOU PREFER THE SLOWER (BUT CALMER) WAY

Rather than performing the steps 3-5 below, you can simply place your recently received package in a clean container and leave it there.

COVID-19 has a 72-hour shelf life on stainless steel and plastic and a 24-hour shelf life on cardboard.

Therefore, if you place them in a large container, close the lid, and leave them alone for four days, theoretically no remaining COVID-19 will survive.

However, if you need them immediately, I recommend the following:

3. DISCARD THE SHIPPING BOX COVID-19 has been shown to survive for up to 24 hours on cardboard. Because you have no idea how many persons handled your package on its route to you, you must take specific precautions.

When I receive a package at my place, I open the external shipping box, empty the contents onto a cleanable surface (without touching the contents…), and recycle the box.

I actually invert the open box and instantly place it in my outside recycling bin.

I make certain that I never have to touch the shipment box again… Avoid stacking it in your home.

I then wash my hands for 20 seconds and clean down any surfaces I’ve touched with Clorox/Lysol wipes (like the recycling bin).

Then I…

4. DISPOSE OF THE TOY’S PACKAGING

I touch the sex toy’s packaging with clean hands.

Packaging for sex toys is typically constructed of cardboard or plastic. COVID-19, once again, can survive up to 24 hours on cardboard. COVID-19, on the other hand, has been reported to survive up to 72 hours on plastic.

To empty the box of its contents (toy, charger, and instructions), I repeat the open-box-then-dump-contents procedure. I let the contents of the box fall out onto a new, easily-cleanable surface.

As with the first procedure, I quickly discard the box and perform a 20-second hand wash.

5. AFTER THAT, CLEAN UP THE TOYS

By this stage, I’m very certain that everything has been completely sanitized… It’s fairly safe to presume that sex toys were not packaged within the last three days by the manufacturer.

However, if you want to be completely satisfied and have peace of mind, you can clean the toys yourself.

Disinfect the toys themselves with clean hands. The majority of silicone, glass, plastic, and stainless steel sex toys are easily cleaned using a 10% bleach solution. I’m not sure if Clorox/Lysol wipes can cause harm to certain sex toy surfaces, but I’ve had no problems thus far.

Even better if you have a waterproof toy! Simply wash it in warm, soapy water for 20 seconds. Take care to clean all crevices , nooks and crannies thoroughly.

(I have not been able to locate information on how long COVID-19 lives on silicone, but because it is a tightly structured substance, I presume it can survive up to 72 hours.)

After cleaning your toys, take a 20-second break to wash your hands.

ADDITIONAL TIPS – Disinfect any surfaces that may have been in contact with delivery items (such as your floor).

  • Throughout the preceding stages, avoid touching your face.
  • If any boxes come into contact with your clothes or arm, immediately throw them in the wash and get to the shower.
  • If you are required to pick up your item at the post office, attempt to get it diverted to your home first. If that fails, consider simply leaving it there until the pandemic subsides (Canada Post is holding packages indefinitely at my time of writing). If you’re going to pick it up, I’d wear gloves, keep a safe distance of two meters from everyone, and remove your soiled gloves before getting into your car. Then, when you return home, wash your hands and clothes.
  • This is not the time to share your toys physically with anyone who is not isolated.

IS THIS AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT?

Maybe. Probably. However, we cannot see the virus directly, and all I know for certain is that I am at a high risk of contracting the coronavirus. Even if you are not at high risk, you may transfer the infection on to someone who is.

However, do not let coronavirus scare you away from purchasing the sex toys of your dreams! Simply exercise reasonable diligence and everything should be fine.

Have a good vibe!
